Former Newcastle United midfielder and ex-Huddersfield and Kilmarnock boss Lee Clark has been left raving over Rangers’ potential swoop for Burnley’s Scott Arfield this summer.
The 29-year-old Canadian international is set to leave Turf Moor on a free transfer in the summer and the Daily Mail report that Ibrox looks set to be his next destination, having made 193 appearances for the Clarets.
Clark is very much an in-the-know over the talent Arfield possesses, having brought him down from Kilmarnock to England to play for Huddersfield back in 2010, and he gave the former Scotland under-21 star a glittering review ahead of his potential return north of the border, although admitted it would be a shock swoop considering he believes the Burnley man belongs in England’s top flight.
He told the Daily Mail: “He was different class for me. He’s a great athlete and a great lad.
“Just a terrific, modern-day box-to-box midfielder, who can play in so many positions. He’s really shown in the past two or three years that he’s a Premier League footballer. He’s just an outstanding lad and a tremendous footballer. For me, it would be an outstanding signing for Rangers.
“If they can attract someone like Scott Arfield from the English Premier League, it shows they still hold big appeal. It’s still a magnificent football club that can still attract top players. It’s going to take serious investment but they are still a massive attraction in the game.”
Football Insider verdict
Clark’s verdict on Rangers signing Arfield is spot on, and it will be considered a real coup both north and south of the border. The way the former Killie boss speaks about his old star shows the level of respect and admiration he has and it seems as though the Light Blues might just be getting their hands on a special talent? Is it enough to close the gap to fierce rivals and table toppers Celtic? The same was asked about Ryan Jack last summer and that move did not have the desired effect, but this certainly seems a step up in class. Exciting times for those at Ibrox.
