Newcastle will continue to monitor the injuries sustained by Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle in last weekend’s draw against Bournemouth before deciding on whether the two are fit to face Liverpool, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
Rafa Benitez’s side head to Anfield on Saturday in desperate need of three points from the Premier League fixture after conceding two late goals in the 2-2 draw with Eddie Howe’s side.
But against the Reds who are flying at the moment, anything other than defeat looks highly unlikely.
And now with the news that they could be travelling without their leading goalscorer, Gayle, who has tightness in his hamstring, and Shelvey who incurred a knock to his knee following a collision with Martin Dubravka, their chances look slighter still.
Newcastle confirmed the Shelvey injury on their official site on Tuesday lunchtime.
Meanwhile, Janury transfer signing Islam Slimani, is definitely out of the match due to a thigh injury that has prevented the Algerian international from making his debut so far.
Despite being slated by BBC pundit Frank Lampard for his part in the goals conceded at the weekend, Shelvey has been one of the Magpies top performers this season.
Defeat at Anfield could see Benitez’ side drop into the relegation zone if results elsewhere go against them as their Premier League status hangs in the balance.
In other Newcastle news, forget £17m rated star, Magpies must snap up proven international attacker destined for the drop.
