Football fans took to Twitter to destroy Eric Dier for his first-half performance in Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Liverpool on Sunday.
The England international was selected to start in a midfield anchorman role alongside Mousa Dembele for Spurs at Anfield as Mauricio Pochettino fielded a 4-2-3-1 formation.
But Dier was made to pay early on for a stray pass that went straight to Mohamed Salah, who pounced on it to slide in his 20th Premier League goal of a remarkable debut season.
The Egypt international has reached that landmark quicker than any player in Liverpool’s history, with his 25-match landmark beating the joint record of 27 games previously held by Daniel Sturridge and Fernando Torres.
It was not just Spurs supporters who took to social media to slam Dier’s first-half performance in what was a raucous atmosphere at Anfield.
Followers of other clubs were equally critical of the versatile Tottenham man, who swap between centre-back and central midfield on a virtual match-by-match basis.
