'Two big boys' are 'on their way' to sign for Newcastle as St James' goes 'electric' - pundit

Newcastle United will “splash the cash” at the end of January and sign two high-profile players to boost their survival hopes.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ transfer plans.

Newcastle confirmed the signing of Chris Wood, 30, on Thursday (13 January) with Burnley confirming his release clause had been activated.

He follows Kieran Trippier, who arrived on 7 January from Atletico Madrid.

McAvennie admits Wood might not be the calibre of player some fans were expecting to arrive this month but he predicts those high-profile players will arrive.

“Trippier was needed right away, so was a striker,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“They have Wood now so that’s another problem fixed. Wood maybe isn’t the name some fans wanted.

“But I think this part of the window is about bringing in players who will get the job done.

“I do think maybe two big boys are on their way to sign, as well as Trippier and Wood. Those bigger names who will have fans excited.

“I think the last week of the window is when Newcastle properly splash the cash.

“Once they have a new defence they will see what is left over and I’m sure they will have plenty left.

“That’s when more bids will go in for players who could be seen as high-profile players.

“It’s such an exciting time to be a Newcastle fan and they deserve this. I know the place, I lived up there for years.

“The place is electric.”

Wood could make his debut on Saturday (15 January) when Newcastle take on Watford.

The Magpies can overtake the Hornets and move out of the relegation zone with a win.
