Two star men out set to miss Leeds showdown against Newcastle - report

By Harry Sykes

Star Newcastle duo Dwight Gayle and Ciaran Clark will miss Friday’s Championship clash against Leeds, according to a report.

The Yorkshire Evening Post claim striker Gayle is ruled out of the televised St James’ Park fixture with a hamstring injury that could end his season.

It is said that defender Clark will also be absent with the injury that has kept him out of Newcastle’s last four matches.

The Yorkshire Evening Post report that midfield anchorman Jack Colback is also a doubt for the clash of the fallen Premier League giants.

Gayle hobbled off with a hamstring injury during the Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, and fears are escalating that he could be out for the remainder of the season.

Gayle will be sorely missed as he tops the Magpies goalscoring charts with 22 goals league goals this season, second in the Championship only to Leeds’ Chris Wood, who has banged in 24 league goals.

Newcastle will have to pin their title hopes on Friday night on back-up forwards Aleksandar Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy, who have scored just 12 goals between them this season.

Clark has also been one of the north-east club’s outstanding players this season after making an excellent impression since transferring from Aston Villa.

Rafael Benitez’s side are close to securing an instant return to the Premier League but have dropped to second in the table behind Brighton following their weekend defeat.

Leeds are well placed to secure a place in the end of season play-off positions, after they cemented their place in fifth following their 3-0 win against Preston on Saturday.

Garry Monk’s side have 72 points with five matches of their league campaign remaining, 12 adrift of Newcastle.

In other Leeds transfer news, the club have sealed an out-of-window midfielder transfer.
