Anderlecht are plotting a potential loan deal for Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels, according to a report.
The Newcastle Chronicle claims that the Belgian giants will have to settle for a temporary signing as “they would struggle to match” the 25-year-old’s £20,000-a-week wage package at St. James. Park.
Sels only arrived on Tyneside from Gent in the summer of 2016, but is already facing the axe after he failed to make much of an impression in Rafa Benitez’s first-team plans last season.
The newly-promoted Premier League side are said to be seeking out a new No 1 and have set their sights firmly on Willy Caballero, who has been set for release by Manchester City.
It is also understood that Fenerbahce are keen on rivalling Champions League club Anderlecht for Sels’ signature.
The Chronicle reports that the wage problem could prove pivotal to a number of different deals this summer as the Magpies look to ship out a number of their undesirable players.
The report says that Grant Hanley could also have to take a pay-cut in a move away from Newcastle, with Derby still pursuing his signature.
Football Insider Verdict
Newcastle have a lot of players that they need to look to sell this summer and it looks like they are starting to pay the price for some very bad buys last year. Hanley and Sels were never going to be good long-term additions to the Toon squad, so it begs the question on whether Benitez will be able to change that this summer. Sels was a huge flop. He cost the Magpies £6.5million and he made just nine league appearances – where is the sense in that? It seems as though Sels will now just have to wind down his contract at St. James’ Park or take a serious pay-cut to end his north-east nightmare.
