Van Dijk decision imminent after ‘behind the scenes’ Liverpool talks – expert
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed a decision on the future of Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool will be made public imminently.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted there is “no doubt” that the 33-year-old will have held behind-the-scenes talks with the club about his next steps.
Van Dijk has less than 12 months to run on his contract at Anfield and has been widely linked with a potential move to the Saudi Pro League.
Speaking after the Netherlands were eliminated from Euro 2024, he said: “I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player”.
The club captain has been at Liverpool since 2018 and has won the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup on Merseyside.
Liverpool to make Van Dijk decision public soon, says Wyness
Wyness suggested tough decisions may have to be made as Arne Slot “knows he can’t carry on with the same group” that had success under Jurgen Klopp.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “A lot of Liverpool’s transfer activity will be based around exits.
“Is Van Dijk going to stay?
“Still, that question hasn’t been answered – and it’s a big question.
“The Saudi situation is hanging over Liverpool. They’re going to have to make those decisions in the coming weeks.
“I’ve got no doubt that there are discussions going on right now behind the scenes.
“I would expect to see the outcome of those talks in the public domain pretty quickly.
“Van Dijk is someone in the higher bracket of the age group in the squad.
“They’ve got the young talent to come through, but they’ve got to have the right blend of experience as well.

“All those components make football so fascinating. This is a classic case of inheriting a squad from another manager who has had success, but you know you can’t carry on with the same group.
“Age doesn’t stop.”
