Jackie McNamara says that Rangers’ bid to sign Manchester City winger Brandon Barker will be an “interesting” move considering the players already at Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international says that the former Hibernian loanee will bring rapid pace and an attacking threat to Steven Gerrard’s side but that he will have plenty of competition in attack.
The Gers have already signed fellow wide men Sheyi Ojo, Jake Hastie and Jordan Jones this summer, the duo joining the likes of Jamie Murphy as options on the wing for Gerrard.
Having watched the 22-year-old during his loan spell at Hibs, McNamara says that Rangers will be getting a speed machine who wants to burst forward at every opportunity.
McNamara told Football Insider: “He was at Hibs a couple of years back. He was quick and direct, will bring a lot of pace but Rangers have got a lot of players.
“Jamie Murphy is coming back from injury, they’ve got Jordan Jones, Greg Stewart, Hastie, Ojo. It will be very interesting. I do think they need a left-back as well.”
Barker has 27 games of experience in Scotland’s top flight, scoring twice and setting up five goals during his time north of the border.
While Gerrard has recruited heavily out wide, he has also seen last season’s stars Ryan Kent and Daniel Candeias leave Ibrox this summer.
