Virgo: These two Leeds senior men can take huge credit for Wood success
By Harvey Byrne
Former Brighton defender turned football pundit Adam Virgo believes both Garry Monk and James Beattie can take credit for Chris Wood’s success this season.
The 25-year-old New Zealand international has been in fine form this campaign, returning 23 goals from 37 apparences for the Yorkshire giants in all competitions.
He has been pivotal in a so far successful season for the Whites and Virgo believes manager Garry Monk and first-team coach James Beattie have been instrumental in getting the best out of the frontman.
“I think James Beattie takes a lot of credit behind the scenes,” started Virgo speaking on Saturday evening’s Channel 5 Football League highlights show about the performances of Wood.
“When you’ve got a natural striker like James, who’s scored goals at the highest level. I think they’ve worked really well with him and confidence is a massive part for strikers. Himself and Garry (Monk) take a huge amount of credit.

“Yes he’s (Wood) scored a lot of their goals, but the team work around him so, so well and they utilise that brilliantly.”
Both Monk and Beattie joined Leeds in the summer after previously working together at Premier League side Swansea.
They have seemingly got the best out of Wood, who only managed 13 goals from 37 matches in all competitions last season and many believe Beattie, who was a star upfront for Southampton and Everton during his playing career has helped the striker become one of the best forward men in the Championship.
Wood’s two goals on Friday evening against Birmingham have placed him as the current top scorer in the league and it is believed he will play a huge part in whether the club end their 13-year wait for Premier League football.
In other Leeds news, David Prutton believes the club answered critics in their win against Birmingham.
