Walker-Peters shares training update with Newcastle’s former star after transfer latest

Kyle Walker-Peters remains on the hunt for a new club after leaving Southampton this summer with several Premier League sides keen.

Southampton‘s dismal season was the second-worst in Premier League history as they recorded a points tally of just 12 across their 38 games, and relegation has led to several players heading for the exit door.

Walker-Peters was one of Southampton’s best last term and in their previous promotion-winning season, but the likes of West Ham had offers lined up as far back as March when Saints’ relegation became clear.

Adam Lallana’s retirement from football had the potential to overshadow Walker-Peter’s own departure being confirmed, but a plethora of Premier League clubs have the full-back on their radar this summer.

Walker-Peters trains with fellow free agent Jamal Lewis

Walker-Peters is on a long shortlist of players West Ham are keen to sign this summer, but the Irons’ evident interest in the 28-year-old is yet to result in an official bid being made by Graham Potter’s side.

Southampton announced Walker-Peters’ departure on 25 June but he’s yet to sign with a new club in the two weeks since, and as a result has been keeping himself fit with a view to making his next move.

Newcastle United left-back Jamal Lewis also became a free agent on 30 June after after an injury-affected five-year spell at St. James’ Park, and he trained with Walker-Peters in the East London area.

Fitness trainer Conor Peters shared an photo of the pair in a sprinting drill on Instagram (8 July), and Walker-Peters shared the image on his own story with both full-backs tagged in the post.

Walker-Peters spoilt for choice in hunt for new club

Football Insider Verdict

Newcastle had planned to sell Lewis last summer ahead of his contract expiring at St. James’ Park, but his surprise loan move to Brazilian side Sao Paulo last season was cut short by yet another injury.

That injury record could see Lewis struggle to find new employment, but Walker-Peters by contrast could have his pick of Premier League clubs this summer despite Southampton’s dismal record last season.

A possible return to Tottenham under Thomas Frank could even be on the cards for Walker-Peters, but as things stand he’ll keep training away from the limelight as he weighs up the best possible next move.
