Football Insider names the biggest flop the year for Newcastle for 2016
After the year Moussa Sissoko has had in a Newcastle shirt, you would question why Tottenham would pay £30 million for his services over the summer.
The 27-year-old was the biggest flop of the Magpies season as he played a huge part in their relegation from the Premier League in May.
Sissoko failed to turn up on numerous occasions this calendar year, didn’t show any fight or hunger, so why Spurs paid a big fee for him is questionable.
The France international played 37 league games, scoring just the one goal against Swansea in April, as he witnessed his side win just nine games throughout the season.
On his day there is no doubt that Sissoko’s pace and power can hurt many opposition defences, but when you turn it off and on like a switch for the paying supporter then you deserve to be the biggest flop of the year.
Sissoko is most criticised for being lazy and bringing a negative mindset to the field, which naturally stems through the team, especially if you are a senior player.
Former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew signed Sissoko from French side Toulouse in 2013, where he impressed instantly with a magnificent debut against Chelsea.
However, his performances over the years have become gradually worse, which have affected the team, so it is baffling why over the course of a 38 game season he was never dropped.
Unsurprisingly, life in north London has not started in the manner in which Sissoko would have liked. He is yet to find the back of the net in a Spurs shirt and he has been questioned by his new manager.
In other Newcastle news, this striker is the biggest disappointment of the year and should be sold in January.
