BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus has bemoaned Charley Musonda as a “monumental waste of money” after it was confirmed the youngster was leaving to go back to parent club Chelsea.

McManus broke the news on his personal Twitter page on Thursday afternoon, saying the 21-year-old attacker would not be at Celtic next season.

He went on to say he was on £40k-a-week and cost over £1million in a loan fee for a player that only made eight appearances for Celtic.

Football Insider verdict:

This was indeed a huge waste of money but also a little odd. When he first arrived Musonda looked really good, but then was just withdrawn from active duty. He only made eight appearances in all, which works out at over £100k-a-game if the reported £1million loan fee is correct. He only started two Premiership games. Chelsea won’t be happy and it could scupper any future deals for young players and unless there’s something behind the scenes which we’re not aware of, it just doesn’t make much sense. Not all transfers work out, but there’s normally a logic behind them. This could just have been a clash of personalities. As for Musonda, he’s young enough to recover from this and move on, but it might have to be in another loan move. We can’t see him troubling the Chelsea first team any time soon and he might have to hope that someone wants to pay the money to take him on this summer, after what can only go down as a failed loan move this season.
