Scott Bain was among the select group of Scotland players who kept their place in the starting XI for Sunday’s 2-0 win over San Marino after the humiliating defeat to Kazakhstan three days earlier. But the Celtic goalkeeper did not get off scott-free in terms of criticism from the Tartan Army, 4,000 of whom had made their way to the European footballing backwater. Scotland secured the three points from Sunday’s Euro 2020 qualifier, but it was far from convincing, and the criticism raining down from the visiting fans made for a toxic atmosphere. Bain has emerged as the first choice at Parkhead, and consequently got the nod for the national side for the last two matches following the retirement of Allan McGregor. The evidence is that Bain still has an awful lot to learn, and must make rapid improvements to be elevated to the level of most leading European keepers. Many fans seem to agree, judging from social media.
