Alan Hutton has been left raving as Aston Villa plot a bid to re-sign Tammy Abraham from Chelsea this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa defender insisted his old teammate would help Ollie Watkins take his game to new heights.
As revealed by Football Insider, Villa have set aside £40million and are ready to lay the groundwork of a record-breaking deal to re-sign the 23-year-old.
Abraham spent the 2018/19 season on loan with the Villans and fired the club to promotion with 26 goals in 40 appearances.
Hutton, who was part of that Villa dressing room, insisted the Chelsea man is a better striker than fans realise.
As such, he suggested the striker would be perfect competition for Ollie Watkins.
“I think he’s a brilliant player,” Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“He’s way better than people think in terms of what he can do with the ball at his feet. He likes to come off short, he can play one-twos but he’s a goal scorer, he’s not scared to get in the mix and mix it with big defenders.
“I feel he’s not had enough time at Chelsea. Last season under Lampard he was playing a lot. They were focused on the young boys and he showed everybody that he can play at that level. This year, since Tuchel’s come in, he’s not got the minutes I think he deserves for whatever reason.
“If Villa have got the opportunity to get someone of that standard, it’s an absolute no-brainer. I mean, now we’re talking about an international player here.
“Ollie Watkins, I love, I think he’s done fantastic for his first season in the Premier League but you need that competition or someone to play with.
“It gives you that other option. You can go long to Tammy, he likes to hold it up with players round about him. You’ve got Wesley to come back to full fitness.
“They want to break into the top six. These are the type of boys that you have to go for. A proven goal scorer that can play the highest level.”
Abraham has netted 12 goals in 32 appearances for Chelsea this season.
However, only one of those goals has come since Tuchel replaced Lampard in January.
