'He's someone we like' - Gerrard admits he wants to bring 21-year-old striker to Rangers
Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has admitted that he would like to sign Roma striker Umar Sadiq, but as yet a deal is not done to bring the 21-year-old to Ibrox.
The Gers need to bring in a striker to complement Alfredo Morelos up-front, and the newly appointed Gers boss has revealed that Sadiq is high on his wishlist.
“We’re a fan of Umar Sadiq but there is nothing to report on that yet in terms of progress but we do like the player” Gerrard said, as quoted by the Herald.
“We’ll have to see how that one materialises. He’d bring us a forward option – height, power, presence. He’s a player that works too hard believe it or not.
“We’ve got an interest but at the moment he’s still a Roma player. It’s ongoing. We have to be respectful and see how it progresses but he’s someone we like.”
Sadiq spent last season at NAC Breda, scoring five goals.

Football Insider verdict
It is always unique when a manager publicly expresses interest in a player, but Steven Gerrard has done this with Umar Sadiq, which shows how much he must want to bring the player to Ibrox. The way he has spoken about the Roma forward in such glowing terms as well, shows that he is a very big fan of the player. The big issue now is getting the deal done, and there is no doubt that Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen would like to get the deal done as soon as possible. But as Gerrard says, there might be a while to go yet before any deal for the 21-year-old is completed. It looks like Gers fans will need to adopt a ‘wait and see’ policy about Sadiq’s signing, as if it does end up happening it might not be for a while yet. Although if the player is as good as Gerrard claims that he is, then he will certainly be worth waiting for.
