Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil struggled to recover from Arsenal’s Champions League exit.
The Gunners were humiliated by current Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich as they were defeated 10-2 over both legs of the Round of 16 tie.
Ozil featured in both games and he faced heavy criticism over his commitment and attitude especially following the first leg at the Allianz Arena.
Following Arsenal’s midweek 3-0 victory over London rivals West Ham, Wenger admitted, as quoted by the Sky Sports website, that the Bayern Munich loss took its toll on the German.
“He was hit hard by us going out in the Champions League – it took some time for him to recovery mentally. He has really been focused in training in the last few weeks.” he said.

Ozil was back to form in midweek as he scored his first Premier League goal since December and he also provided an assist for Theo Walcott.
His performance earned some praise from his manager as Wenger stated: “I feel that he is back physically. He is focused. I know him quite well.”
The victory on Wednesday night saw the Gunners move above Manchester United into fifth place and they are currently four points off the Champions League places with a game in hand.
Ozil’s contract situation at the club remains unresolved only adding to the speculation that he will leave Arsenal in the summer.
Despite recent criticism, Ozil has still scored six Premier League goals and provided six assists this season and he’ll be looking to add to this tally as Arsenal travel to Crystal Palace next Monday night.
