Why Wenger must bust Mourinho hoodoo at all costs and guide Arsenal to victory v Man United
COMMENT by Abigail Withey
The rivalry between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho is a recognised one, with frosty looks and heated comments common as they prepare to clash on the field.
The rivalry is one that almost overshadows what happens on the pitch, with Man United’s Mourinho saying that he felt Wenger was respected by journalists and he wasn’t at their last clash back in November.
The score that day was 1-1, yet many people remember the words shared between the two of the most successful managers in the Premier League, as opposed to the actual result.
Wenger has a terrible record against Mourinho, with only one win in the past 16 games against his rival – in the 2015 FA Community Shield.
If the Gunners don’t secure a win this weekend against Manchester United, it will not only worsen his already poor record against Mourinho, but also ensure that his side don’t qualify for the Champions League.

However, with Wenger it seems psychological, and he cannot let the pressure of his and Jose’s turbulent past impact on his position at Arsenal.
He’s already facing pressures from many Arsenal fans, with ‘Wenger Out’ even being lit up on the walls of Highbury, Arsenal’s old ground, at the weekend.
If he doesn’t win against United on Sunday then he should go in the summer, and Wenger probably knows that. It’s his last chance of the season to really get it right, and boost the morale of the team and fans.
Mourinhi is renowned as a master tactician, a manager who can win however his team have to play to achieve the victory.
Wenger is the opposite and he’s been criticised this season for being tactically naive.
If there’s one thing that could salvage his reputation – and put some shine on a terrible season, it would be victory against Mourinho in such a crucial fixture.
Mourinho will know the pressure Wenger is under however, and will undoubtably use that to his advantage.
It’s going to be a fascinating confrontation – off the pitch as well as on it.
