Wenham can't believe new Merson swipe at 'brilliant' Hojbjerg after 'massive' Tottenham claim
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg proved how important he is to Tottenham after he opened the scoring against Aston Villa at the weekend.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Hojbjerg scored his first Premier League goal of the season as Spurs beat Villa 2-1 on Sunday.
The midfielder hasn’t missed a minute of league action under Nuno Espirito Santo.
However, Sky Sports’ Paul Merson recently hit out at Hojbjerg, telling 90mins’ YouTube channel, “he thinks he’s better than he is”.
Wenham insisted this isn’t the case and hailed the midfielder’s importance to the side.

“He has stepped up this season,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“At the moment he is playing more advanced than he normally would and he has that confidence to attack.
“We saw him score a few during the Euros and he made the team of the tournament. He was brilliant.
“Hopefully Tottenham can benefit from that. His goal against Villa was an excellent finish into the bottom corner.
“That first goal in the Premier League is always important because more often than not, the first goal wins the game.
“He was massive and has been all season. He covered a lot of grass and he was very involved in other attacking moves.
“I’m not big on expected goals and those kinds of stats but against Villa, we scored two for this first time in the league this season.
“I think that comes from that midfield pair of Hojbjerg and Skipp. It was great to see him on the scoresheet and hopefully, we will see that more this season.”
