Wenham: This is why Thorpe quit for Luton Town after 11th hour Tottenham transfer collapse
Elliot Thorpe’s decision to leave Tottenham makes sense considering the wealth of midfield talent at the club.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
Thorpe left Tottenham and joined Luton Town on 24 September.
Tottenham had offered Thorpe a new contract to replace his deal which was due to expire at the end of June.
But, as revealed by Football Insider on 28th May, the young midfielder knocked it back in order to join a club where there is a clearer first-team pathway.
On 21 September, this site also revealed Thorpe passed a medical at Hoffenheim over the summer but the move collapsed at the eleventh hour as they couldn’t agree compensation with Tottenham.

Wenham insists there is a lot of competition in the academy midfield and understands why Thorpe took the decision to leave.
“It’s a shame to see him go,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He sent me a tweet actually, thanking me for his support over the years. Not many players personally tag you in a post, I don’t know if that’s ever happened to me before.
“That was really nice. In that academy midfield we have the likes of Alfie Devine and Jamie Bowden who is currently starting every game for Oldham.
“We have a lot of players who are close to making that breakthrough. He had a growth spurt last season and looked a real player.
“He scored two goals in a 4-1 win over Liverpool for the Under 23s, it’s sad to see him go.
“Elliot always had that positive attitude. He loved playing for Tottenham.
“It’s just there were too many midfielders in there and I do think the Luton move will be great for him.”
