West Brom could seal ‘big coup’ with Johnstone extension after confirmed news – Robinson
Paul Robinson has claimed “it would be a big coup” if West Brom tie Sam Johnstone down to a new deal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the significant improvement under Valerien Ismael has likely persuaded the 28-year-old into staying.
Johnstone was widely expected to depart the Hawthorns this summer.
West Ham failed with a £10million bid for the shot-stopper before signing Alphonse Areola instead.
Football Insider revealed on August 13th that the England international is set to stay with West Brom this season.
As quoted by the Express & Star, Ismael revealed the club have held talks with Johnstone’s representatives over a new deal.
His current contract expires in June 2022.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “It would be a big coup if they were able to keep him.
“Their team is arguably the strongest in the Championship.
“They’ve started the season really well and I think it’s had a big impact on Sam Johnstone. I think he is seeing what the new manager is doing and is thinking, ‘We are going back to the Premier League here.’
“It might not be a bad thing for him having one season in the Championship.
“It would be great for West Brom if they can tie him down. I think it would also be good for Johnstone because he could be part of a Championship-winning side.”

Johnstone was named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming international break.
He’s made four appearances for the Baggies this season and kept two clean sheets.
