West Ham confirm multiple first-team injury updates, playmaker doubtful for Man United clash
By Danny Wright
West Ham’s head of medical services Gary Lewin has confirmed that multiple first-team players are making progress towards returning to senior football with the start of the Premier League season now just around the corner.
However the Hammers are very likely to have to open their campaign against Manchester United on Sunday without the services of influential playmaker Manuel Lanzini.
Lewin has said that he hopes the Argentine, as well as Cheikhou Kouyate, will “be available again before the international break”, meaning that the pair are likely to miss this weekend’s trip to Old Trafford.
There were also encouraging updates on other members of Slaven Bilic’s first-team.
“Andy Carroll has stepped up his rehab recently and we are hoping to have him back in full training in the near future,” said Lewin on the official West Ham website.

“I never like putting times or dates on a player’s return from injury because it has to be assessed day to day and things can change, but we are looking at days not weeks with Andy, in terms of being back on the training pitch.
“Diafra Sakho and Winston Reid played in the Under-23 match at Tottenham last weekend and both came through it fine. Diafra has now had a full week of training, which is very positive for him, and we can now start to look at getting him some match time.”
After picking up a knock in pre-season, Lewin also made it clear that Mark Noble is ready for the showdown with title contenders United, as well as Pedro Obiang who missed most of the end of last season through injury.
Michail Antonio is also “very close” to a return to action according to Lewin.
The winger hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for West Ham since April after being left ravaged with a hamstring injury which scuppered his season.
West Ham were hit hard by injuries last term as they failed to finish in the top half of the Premier League table.
They have since made five new additions to their squad with Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez and Sead Haksabanovic signing for the east London side, all of which seem ready to take on Jose Mourinho’s men this weekend.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers are huge favourites to sign this Spanish attacker.
