West Ham could be about to sign Callum Wilson for ‘amazing’ price – expert

Callum Wilson could be the “perfect” player to fire West Ham United to success next season under new boss Julen Lopetegui.

That is the opinion of former Irons and Scotland striker Frank McAvennie, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the reports that his former club are interested in the Magpies forward.

Football Insider previously revealed Newcastle are open to selling the 32-year-old this summer, despite Eddie Howe initially planning to keep him.

West Ham will face competition in trying to sign Wilson as Football Insider revealed Everton are also keeping tabs on him, particularly if Dominic Calvert-Lewin leaves this summer.

Wilson has scored 88 goals in 221 games in the English top flight, but his contract with Newcastle does expire next summer.

Callum Wilson would work well in the expected attacking West Ham system

Wilson has dealt with various injuries throughout his career, but McAvennie thinks signing him could pay off due to the new attacking style of play that the Irons are expected to be implementing.

Yeah,” he initially told Football Insider when asked if Wilson would be a risk due to his injuries after he made just six appearances in the Premier League this calendar year.

“Well, I’m saying yeah, but that’s me thinking of David Moyes’ way, it depends on this new boy [Lopetegui].”

“If Callum Wilson comes into the club and we’re playing a different way and we’re getting chances in the box, we’re flying the ball into the box then Callum Wilson’s perfect, because he’ll score goals.

“Yes, he has an injury problem, but the more you play, the better it’ll get; he’s not a West Ham kind of player, but he might be this year.

We don’t know how this manager is going to play; by all accounts, he’s going to be playing on the front foot, so Callum Wilson might be ideal.

“For £10million, you can’t get a striker that can score his goals for £10million, so that’s an amazing price.”
