West Ham fans react on Twitter to reported interest in 29-year-old PL attacker

By Will Butcher

Shane Long could be on his way to West Ham as Slaven Bilic continues his striker hunt – but fans are not impressed with the speculation on Twitter.

The Daily Mail revealed that the Hammers are targeting a move for the 29-year-old this month, who is currently out of favour at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Long, a 71-time Ireland international, is currently behind the likes of Charlie Austin, currently injured, and Jay Rodriguez on the south Coast, despite playing 90 minutes against West Brom on New Year’s Eve, and manager Claude Puel could sanction a deal.

West Ham are desperate for a new striker, as summer signings Simone Zaza and Jonathan Calleri remain fruitless in front of goal.

Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew have struggled with multiple injuries, while Ashley Fletcher is reportedly in talks with Championship outfit Leeds and that could mean a move for Long is on the cards.

However, fans on Twitter aren’t interested in the move and don’t think he’s at the level the club needs.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Last month, one fan summed up West Ham’s striker pursuit with his humorous tweet.

Since his £12million move to the Saints in the summer of 2014, Long has managed just 21 goals in all competitions during 95 outings.

However, Long could provide good cover for Bilic, as the Irishman is able to play out wide as well as centre forward.

In other West Ham transfer news, Hammers are favourites to sign another PL striker.
