Sky's Johnstone news tells me 'something not right' at West Ham - Kenny

West Ham are reportedly interested in Sam Johnstone – and that means “something’s not right” in the goalkeeping department.

So says ex-Premier League shot-stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about David Moyes’ options between the sticks.

Sky Sports reported on 2 November that West Ham are interested in West Brom number one Johnstone, whose deal expires at the end of the season.

Lukasz Fabianksi, who is out of contract in the summer but is in talks over a new deal, has been Moyes’ go-to goalkeeper this season.

Alphonse Areola joined on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in July but has been limited to appearances in the cup competitions.

And Kenny claims that the Hammers’ apparent interest in Johnstone suggests that they are keen to move in a different direction.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “It sounds to me like they are looking for someone more permanent than Areola.

“In goalkeeper terms, Sam Johnstone is still young at 28. He hasn’t even got to his peak yet.

“I think this shows that something’s not right in that goalkeeping department. They’re not quite happy.

“Whether they know he’s going to go back to PSG and they have no other options, I don’t know.

“It would be interesting to see whether Johnstone would be willing to sit on the bench because Fabianski is doing brilliantly at the moment.

“But Johnstone is an amazing goalkeeper in his own right. He’ll want to do everything he can to make sure he’s in contention for that England squad.”
