West Ham medical chief delivers update on seven senior men, 27-year-old suffers further blow

By Will Butcher

West Ham head physio Stijn Vandenbroucke has delivered an update on the Hammers’ huge injury list, which sees seven first-team stars undergoing treatment.

Mark Noble, Cheikhou Kouyate, Winston Reid, Pedro Obiang, Diafra Sakho, Michail Antonio are all sidelined to face Burnley, but Angelo Ogbonna will be available for Sunday’s clash.

Head physio Vandenbroucke delivered the update on West Ham’s official website, but revealed that 27-year-old Sakho had received a further setback in his fight to overcome a back problem.

The versatile forward has made just four appearances all season for the Hammers, but has suffered another problem in his long-standing back injury and will return in June.

Skipper Noble has undergone successful surgery to correct an abdominal issue, while New Zealand international Reid has also gone under the knife to fix a chronic problem.

Midfielder Kouyate had already gone under surgery to heal his wrist injury last week, a problem which he had been playing with for quite some time.

Former Nottingham Forest star Antonio has also reacted well to an operation on his hamstring, and will be accompanied by a physio on holiday where he is due to get married.

Italy international Ogbonna returned on the weekend during the 4-0 loss to Liverpool after a long-term knee injury sustained in January, a problem which has troubled him for seven years.

He, however, will be fit to face Burnley on Sunday in the Hammers’ last game of the season, but Spanish midfielder Obiang will not be available as he continues his recovery from a similar issue.

The Hammers will be hoping for a repeat of the reverse fixture that saw them win 1-0 at the London Stadium back in December, thanks to a goal from Noble.

In other West Ham news, Packie Bonner believes this defensive star will have no trouble in finding a new club.
