West Ham player ratings v Arsenal: Carroll scores on return

By Matt Farr

Football Insider rates the West Ham players in their miserable 5-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday.

Darren Randolph 6 – Simply cannot rely on his defenders at all. Was rarely tested in the first-half as Arsenal were wasteful, but made some important saves in the second to limit the Gunners lead. Still, he had to pick the ball out of his net on five occasions.

James Collins N/A – It would be unfair to judge him on his performance, as he hobbled off after just seven minutes. Kept a clean sheet though.

Winston Reid 4 – Could hardly match Sanchez for pace and it showed, as the Chilean striker netted a hat-trick.

Angelo Ogbonna 5 – Made some crucial interceptions, but gifted the Gunners possession for their opening goal. A poor defensive display all round from the home side.

Edimilson Fernandes 5 – Struggled to contain Arsenal’s attacking play on the right. Couldn’t quite fill the boots of the absent Michail Antonio. Withdrawn for Andre Ayew for the last half-hour.

Mark Noble 5 – Quiet game in a midfield that was dominated by Arsenal. Didn’t get involved enough.

Pedro Obiang 6 – Won the ball well on occasion, but failure to close down Arsenal’s players was the issue and they suffered because of it.

Artur Masuaku 5 – In for the injured Aaron Cresswell, but failed to have the same impact. Beaten all too easily by Sanchez for his second goal.

Manuel Lanzini 6 – One of the more positive aspects of West Ham’s performance. Looked to drive forward with purpose and made some promising runs.

Dimitri Payet 6 – Far from the player of last season, but his delivery from set-pieces was impressive. Set-up Andy Carroll’s consolation goal with help of the crossbar.

Ashley Fletcher 6 – An isolated figure in the first period. Came alive in the second, but ultimately a forgettable day for the Hammers.
