West Ham promise Julen Lopetegui ‘huge’ budget after new twist – Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed West Ham will have promised Julen Lopetegui a “huge” summer budget to take over at the club.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested he was not surprised to see the Spaniard turn Bayern Munich down, as he wasn’t a “good fit” for the German giants.
West Ham confirmed the departure of David Moyes on Monday (6 May) and Football Insider revealed on Sunday (5 May) that Lopetegui has been offered an “enormous” deal to make him the club’s best-paid manager ever.
In the latest twist to emerge, it has been reported that the 57-year-old turned down Bayern Munich to take the job in east London.
West Ham, who currently sit ninth in the Premier League, are almost certain to be without European football in the 2024-25 campaign.
Lopetegui can make ‘fresh start’ at West Ham after Moyes era ends, says Wyness
Wyness suggested Lopetegui will be given the chance to make a “fresh start” at the London Stadium after the end of the Moyes era.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I never really felt he was a good fit for Bayern.
“I don’t think he’s the right personality for them. That is key to their decision-making – figuring out how your personality will fit into the Bayern way.
“I wasn’t really surprised to see him turn them down.
“I’m sure he will have been promised a huge budget to take over at West Ham anyway.
“Looking at the numbers, I’m not sure they’re in any danger of breaching the PSR situations.

“We’ve then got the new rules potentially coming in next year.
“I would think he’s been promised the chance to make a fresh start at the club in the market this summer.”
