‘West Ham to sign Jamie Vardy from Leicester City’ in ‘wonderful’ update
West Ham could be perfectly placed to take advantage of Leicester City’s anticipated relegation from the Premier League by poaching Jamie Vardy this summer.
With the Hammers currently sitting 16th in the Premier League table, it has been a tough campaign for all involved at the London Stadium, and scoring goals will have certainly been on the agenda.
Only four teams in the division – Everton, Ipswich Town, Leicester and Southampton – have scored fewer goals since the season kicked off, with Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek accounting for 43 per cent of their goals.
In fact, Bowen’s performances have seen him linked with a move to Liverpool, and unless the Hammers can find a way to unburden him with the pressure in the final third, a transfer away could materialise.
While Jamie Vardy is now 38 years of age, he has still managed to notch seven goals and three assists in 28 performances, and continues his legacy as one of the league’s best-ever scorers.
Vardy has no plans to retire, with his future at the King Power Stadium to be decided before the end of the season according to Sky Sports News, and now Troy Deeney believes he could be the perfect signing for Graham Potter this summer.
Jamie Vardy to finally move away from Leicester City to fix West Ham’s issues
Speaking via talkSPORT [7 April], Deeney said: “Jamie’s in a wonderful position because there aren’t many No.9s in world football, let alone in the Premier League. I could see him doing well for Everton or West Ham.
“He’s one of those players that when you’re up against him, you hate him, but if he’s on your team, you love him. Using West Ham as a case study, they’ve got [Niclas] Fullkrug and will probably try to get another striker.
“Having Jamie Vardy as a third or second option is fantastic. As the season goes on, there will be rotation and injuries, so I think he’d be a great one for a lot of Premier League teams.”
David Sullivan to secure new striker signing for Graham Potter this summer
Football Insider verdict
Potter is in desperate need of a squad overhaul this summer, with a new striker just one of the many changes expected to be made once the transfer window opens at the end of the season.
With Ruud van Nistelrooy under immense pressure at Leicester, and his team 15 points from safety with seven games remaining, it seems inevitable that the Foxes will be back in the Championship.
The majority of supporters will raise eyebrows at the signing of another ageing forward, given how well Fullkrug’s time at West Ham has gone down, but there is no denying his credentials in the division.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
Jamie Vardy | 493 | 198 | 69 |
Bowen can only maintain his goalscoring record for so long before he hits a rough patch, and if injury were to strike, it is difficult to envision where the goals would come from then.
David Sullivan is unlikely to splash the cash for a second consecutive summer transfer window, and with Football Insider understanding that Leicester are unhappy with Vardy’s influence, there could be a bargain deal to be done this summer.
