Noel Whelan has hailed Leeds United flop Izzy Brown as a top player who can win over Marcelo Bielsa.

Brown was omitted from the United matchday squad for the fourth consecutive game on Tuesday night despite being fit and available for selection.

The on-loan Chelsea attacking midfielder was left out in favour of the likes of teenagers Jamie Shackleton and Jordan Stevens as Leeds won 2-0 against Preston at Deepdale to climb back into second place in the Championship.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Whelan explained that he is a big admirer of Brown after seeing him shine in previous loan spells in Championship at Rotherham and Huddersfield.

“Izzy Brown unfortunately isn’t really getting a look in because of the under-23s who have come into the side,” Whelan said. “They’ve done so well and they deserve the opportunity.

“I’m sure he will get his chance because I’ve seen him play at Rotherham and Huddersfield so we know what a player we have on the sidelines and on the bench at times, but right now he’s under massive competition from everyone else who has been playing so well.”

Brown joined Leeds on a season-long loan from Chelsea last August but was not available for selection until January as he recovered from a cruciate ligament injury.

The 22-year-old has subsequently had just nine minutes of senior action and has instead been a regular for the club’s Under-23s.
