‘What’s gone on’ – Anthony Gordon sends message to Alexander Isak amid bombshell Newcastle exit

Alexander Isak finally completed his blockbuster move from Newcastle United to Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

The deal, worth £125 million, made Isak the most expensive transfer deadline day signing of all time as well as becoming the most expensive British transfer ever, the second time Liverpool have broken that record this window.

Isak had been pushing for the move throughout the transfer window, effectively going on strike in an attempt to force through the switch.

Newcastle have since reinvested the money in a high profile hold-out case of their own, bringing in Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m.

It was a torrid transfer window for Newcastle, seeing targets slip away at an alarming rate, but the signings of Wissa and Nick Woltemade have softened the blow.

Anthony Gordon bids Alexander Isak farewell

Isak helped Newcastle to their first major trophy in 70 years while at the club and the Swedish international was adored by the fans.

It appears he was equally adored by his teammates, none perhaps more so than his attacking partner Anthony Gordon, who took to Instagram to post an emotionsl farewell to the Swede.

The Englishman said: “Regardless of the situation and what’s gone on. It’s been a pleasure to play with you.

“One of the best chemistries I’ve had on the pitch and more importantly a great person and teammate. I wish you nothing but the best brother,” Gordon signed off.

Gordon joined Newcastle in January 2023, six months after Isak came to the club, and the two struck up a great partnership in Newcastle’s front three, combining for 61 goals during their two full seasons together at St. James’ Park.

Eddie Howe will relish the silence after Alexander Isak saga

Football Insider verdict

All of the noise that surrounded Isak didn’t help to curb the negative atmosphere that built up during Newcastle’s transfer window.

Now, with Isak out of the picture, and supplemented depth options in place, Eddie Howe has the chance to knuckle down once again and deliver another triumphant season with Newcastle.

The 47-year-old is at his best when he’s a quiet operator going under the radar, and he can do that now with a Newcastle side that will have their sights set on lofty goals this season.

A Champions League place will surely be a must, but building on last season’s Carabao Cup victory will also be important as Howe looks to continue building a winning culture on Tyneside.
