Noel Whelan has blasted the attitude of West Brom winger Oliver Burke after seeing him struggle on loan at Celtic last season.
Speaking to Football Insider in an exclusive interview, the former Leeds United star and Championship expert insists that the Baggies forward has everything you could want from an attacking talent, leading to doubts over the way he applies himself.
The 22-year-old Scotland international spent the second half of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Celtic Park, having managed to turn out just four times for West Brom before his exit, and made 19 appearances for the Hoops.
Whelan has suggested that his struggles at both Parkhead and the Hawthorns come down the player and his dedication both on the pitch and on the training ground, insisting he has the physical and technical abilities needed to be a success.
Asked what had gone wrong for Burke, Whelan told Football Insider: “I think a lot of it comes down to attitude. Why isn’t the manager playing him? Why is he on the bench?
“Is he not doing enough in training? Are the other players better than him? It’s a point where someone’s got to rise to the occasion and show the fight. He’s got every attribute you could possibly want.
“He’s got the height, he’s got the power, he’s got the pace, he’s got the skill, he’s got an eye for goal, he can score with his head, with his feet – there’s obviously something that’s been missing there for ages.
“I think everyone expected a lot more from him. The potential’s there.”
Since moving to West Brom from RB Leipzig in 2017, Burke has made just 21 appearances for the Midlands outfit, 15 of those coming during the Baggies’ ill-fated Premier League campaign which ended in relegation.
In other West Brom news, it can be REVEALED that the Baggies are in pursuit of a giant signing from a Premier League heavyweight.
