Noel Whelan has heaped praise on Stuart Dallas as Leeds United potentially ready a new contract offer for the midfielder.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites striker said he would have offered the 29-year-old, who is “pivotal” in the dressing room, improved terms last season.
The Athletic‘s Phil Hay claimed on Saturday that he doesn’t “think it will be long” before the club offer the Northern Ireland international a new deal.
Dallas has just over two years remaining on his current contract at Elland Road, having last renewed terms in September 2019.
He has been ever-present for Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the Premier League this season, with seven goals and two assists to his name in 31 appearances.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Dallas’ contract situation, Whelan said: “Dallas has proven time and time again just how important he is to this team.
“If you speak to the rest of the lads, they will tell you how important he is.
“In the changing room, as well as on the field, he is pivotal. He never lets anyone down.
“He is so consistent it is frightening. Every game he gives 100 per cent and you never question his performance.
“I would be the first one slapping a contract on the table for him. I would have done it last season to be quite honest.
“He has proven that he can do everything at the top level. Like Kalvin Phillips, he is so important in that midfield with the energy and quality that he brings.”
