Aston Villa will be a “ready-made Premier League side” if they sign Dean Smith’s “number one target” Tammy Abraham this summer, according to Noel Whelan.
The ex-Leeds United and Coventry City striker is a massive admirer of Abraham after watching him at close quarters as Villa stormed to promotion via the play-offs.
The 21-year-old banged in 26 goals from 40 Championship games to enhance his reputation during his season on loan from Chelsea.
Multiple Premier League clubs, including Villa, Wolves and Everton, are eager to sign Abraham although the transfer ban for the Europa League winners could stymie their hopes.
“Villa will be a ready-made Premier League side if they sign Abraham,” Whelan told Football Insider. “It’s no surprise they want him, but so do lots of teams.
“He might be the number one Dean Smith target but he will be the first choice target for plenty of teams trying to sign a striker.
“He’s quick, powerful, his movement is great and he’s got a real eye for goal. He will be a real handful for Premier League defences next season.
“Villa have got a strong squad with some really talented players who will have no problem adapting to the Premier League – [John] McGinn, [Jack] Grealish – but Abraham could really elevate them.”
Abraham revealed his happiness at Villa Park in the wake of their promotion success at Wembley on Monday and said “never say never” when asked if he could move permanently to the Midlands giants.
He has a Chelsea contract that runs until the summer of 2022.
In the latest Aston Villa news, it can be REVEALED that the club have reached a verbal agreement to make loan star their first summer signing.
