Whelan issues three-word verdict after Carragher’s Leeds ‘fear’ claim

Noel Whelan is adamant Leeds United will not be dragged into a relegation fight this season despite a dismal start to the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Whites ambassador said he is not worried about Marcelo Bielsa’s side even though they are 17th in the table.

Leeds are winless in their first five Premier League fixtures of the campaign after a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United on Friday.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post (17th September), Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports he does not have any relegation fears for Leeds.

Asked by Football Insider if he has any doubt Leeds will stay up, Whelan delivered an emphatic three-word reply: “Absolutely no doubt.”

He added: “Listen, nobody is thinking about anything bar the next game.

“There is no easy games in the Premier League. To win a game you need to be near on perfect from start to finish. It is extremely difficult. Every single team in the division has quality and a match winner in their side.

“I have absolutely no doubt that we will be OK. When you look at the grand old scheme of things we have played Liverpool, Man United and Everton in our first five games.

“Yes, we are not firing on all cylinders yet but that will come soon. It takes players six or seven games to get into the stride of things. It is difficult at the beginning of the season for any side but we know what we need to do.

“We will be fine. We have a great squad, a great manager and some fantastic youngsters breaking into the first team. You can never say never but I am very confident this team is going to go on a run very soon.

“It is just unfortunate that we have key defenders out at a crucial time of the season.”
