Whelan hints at 'surprise Leeds transfer' as he delivers verdict on Phillips masterclass

Noel Whelan insists Leeds United will be adding “millions” on to Kalvin Phillips’ price tag after his performance for England on Sunday.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the midfielder will now be attracting attention from top clubs.

Phillips turned in a stellar performance as England beat Croatia on Sunday afternoon.

He provided the assist for Raheem Sterling’s winner as the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 campaign got off to the best possible start.

Phillips, 25, was lauded by pundits after the game as Jose Mourinho told TalkSPORT he was ‘fantastic’.

When asked if big clubs will now be looking at Phillips when the transfer window opens, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “Absolutely, this is the platform.

“Those big clubs will definitely be looking now if they weren’t already.

“This is where your big transfers come from. Sometimes you see surprise transfers because someone shines on the big stage.

“He’s in the international side for a reason. Leeds United know how important he is to the side.

“He’s a Leeds lad and he wants to be part of big things at Leeds. It’s only a credit to him and the club if he starts getting transfer rumours.

“I very much think he won’t be going anywhere. He is pivotal to how we play going forward as a team and as a club.

“The club will be adding millions to his price tag after Sunday, we can’t lose him.”

Phillips made 29 Premier League appearances last season as Leeds secured a top 10 finish in the Premier League.

He scored his first goal of the campaign on the final day of the season.
