Whelan makes big Rangers summer transfer claim after Friday swoop - Ibrox Exclusive
Noel Whelan has claimed that Rangers new boy Florian Kamberi will be sent straight back to Hibernian at the end of the season if he doesn’t hit the ground running at Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen striker suggested that the 24-year-old Hungarian forward felt like more of a quick fix than a long term solution for Steven Gerrard’s side.
The manager confirmed in his pre-Aberdeen press conference yesterday that veteran option Jermain Defoe is set to be out for up to five weeks after sustaining an injury against Ross County in midweek.
Subsequently, the Gers moved to bring in Kamberi on a short-term loan deal, but Whelan has argued that he will need to start firing quickly if he is to convince his new club to try and make that deal permanent come the end of the season.
“What they had to do was cover their backs, which is what they did,” he told Football Insider.
“They needed that strength in the centre-forward role, especially with the injury to Jermain Defoe.

“I think that [signing Kamberi permanently] will be assessed at the end of the season. You can only judge a player on how well he plays and the goals that he scores between now and then. If he doesn’t then he won’t be signed, it’s as simple as that.
“He’ll go straight back to Hibs, and I think a club like Rangers will probably just see things out until the end of the season with that player and then go into market and probably get somebody more prolific with a little bit more about him because you need to have star players at clubs like that.
“I’m not saying that he won’t be a star player, but it just seems to me that he’s a piece of the jigsaw for now then he’ll be taken out.”
Kamberi joined Hibernian permanently from Swiss side Grasshopper Club Zurich in the summer of 2018 for a fee of around £117,000 after initially arriving in Edinburgh on loan a few months prior.
So far this term he has hit eight goals and four assists in 27 appearances in all competitions.
