Whelan makes divisive Bamford claim after 'huge' news from Leeds

Noel Whelan has admitted he is “chuffed to bits” Patrick Bamford has signed a new contract at Leeds United.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the hitman’s new deal is “huge” for the Whites.

Leeds confirmed on Thursday (August 19th) Bamford has signed a new five-year deal at Elland Road.

Bamford arrived at Leeds from Middlesbrough back in 2018 for a reported £7million.

Whelan admitted the striker has divided opinion at Elland Road since joining.

However, he insisted the 27-year-old is well-deserving of his new terms.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s huge because he’s done fantastically well over the last two years.

“I’m chuffed to bits for him because he thoroughly deserves that contract.

“He’s been integral to a really successful return to the Premier League last season with the goals that he got. On the verge of an England call up as well and probably, in a lot of people’s eyes, should have got that opportunity.

“He was massive in the Championship title-winning side that got us back into the Premier League. I mean for a snip of £7million pounds, it’s been one of the best buys I think Leeds have done.

“That might be 50/50 divided between fans, but all you have to do is look at his record of goals per game. It’s been excellent.

“We’ve got a striker that, hopefully, will go from strength to strength again and have another great campaign in the Premier League.”

Bamford scored 17 goals in 38 Premier League appearances last season.

He has netted a total of 43 times in 111 games for Leeds to date.
