Noel Whelan insists Tottenham have no chance of appointing Zinedine Zidane as their new manager.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Spurs need to attract a big name manager following their failure to appoint Antonio Conte.
Football Insider reported on June 3 that the club were increasingly confident of appointing Conte as their new manager after holding key talks.
However, BBC Sport reported the day after Spurs had pulled the plug on further discussions amid doubts over the transfer budget.
Conte and Zidane are both out of work after leaving Inter Milan and Real Madrid respectively.
Whelan insists Spurs have to target a big name manager like Conte as their hunt for a Mourinho replacement continues.
“You’ve got to bring in a big name,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“Tottenham is going to need a big name there, they’ve got big players at the minute.
“Antonio Conte, you’ve got to say he would probably be on top of the list of the managers that are out of work.
“Zidane has done very very well. Wow, he would be big for Tottenham. Another serial winner at Real Madrid, but would he want to go into a team that you might have to do a bit more work and not be successful? No.
“Conte, wow. He’s got the experience. We know for one is going to be animated on the sidelines.
“Number two, he would bring that Italian passion he has burning inside of him.
“I think he would have been a better appointment than Jose Mourinho. I think he’s a little bit less arrogant.
“And he knows the Premier League. He knows what he needs to do.”
