Noel Whelan claims that Premier League sides were sniffing around for John McGinn as he applauds the midfielder’s new five-year deal at Aston Villa.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds star and Championship expert says that the Scottish international was in the sights of top-flight clubs and that the Villans have done the right thing in tying him down to new and improved terms.
The Villans confirmed on Thursday that McGinna had put pen to paper on a new long-term contract ahead of their return to Premier League action.
Whelan says it is a deal McGinn is worthy of and that he is expecting the 23-year-old to continue to improve and impress in the top flight.
“It is well deserved. He’s a cracking player, goalscorer from midfield, creator in midfield, competitor in midfield,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“Really good attitude and looks a real professional player as well on the training ground and in and around Villa Park.
“He’s deserved that and I still think the best football is yet to come. He was looked at by some Premier League clubs so I think the club have recognised that and done the right thing in giving him a long-term deal to keep him tied down.
“His best football is yet to come.”
McGinn, who joined from Scottish top-flight side Hibernian last summer, was voted as Villa’s player of the season by both his teammates and the fans in his debut campaign at the club.
Villa secured their place in the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, defeating Derby County a year after losing out to Fulham at Wembley.
