Whelan salutes Greenwood after Leeds injury update via Instagram
Leeds United striker Sam Greenwood will be “disappointed” after picking up an injury during a “promising” first senior start, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Whites hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 19-year-old could have enjoyed a run of games in the side amid an injury crisis among the club’s strikers.
Greenwood confirmed via Instagram on Monday (10 January) that he had suffered an injury after being substituted at half-time during the FA Cup clash.
Rodrigo is a long-term absentee, while manager Marcelo Bielsa revealed (9 January) that Bamford and Gelhardt picked up fresh complaints in training last week.
Whelan suggested Greenwood, who is yet to make his first Premier League start, needs more first-team football in order to adjust to senior action.
“It was great to see him out there against West Ham,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“We wanted to see a little bit more of him and he’ll be disappointed to have picked up this injury at a time where he could’ve had more chances.
“You’ve got to understand that it’s a big step from the under-23s to Premier League football, especially when you’re playing a great side like West Ham.
“He was isolated at times, and you could see that he was a young boy. He needs to develop that real strength on the ball.
“It’s a great step which has progressed his career. I don’t think he’s quite on par with Gelhardt but he’s had as much first-team football.
“It’s really promising to see him out there alongside two other teenagers in Lewis Bate and Leo Hjelde. They really held their own against really good opposition.”
Greenwood has netted seven goals and registered four assists in 14 Premier League 2 outings this term.
The ex-Arsenal starlet has one goal in one appearance for England’s U21 side.
