Whelan shares £300m transfer claim as three Tottenham senior stars in line to leave

Noel Whelan claims Tottenham have to spend £300million on new players if they want to challenge for the Premier League title.

The Leeds United hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims removing the deadwood from Spurs isn’t enough to improve the team.

Tottenham are set for a summer of change with several senior players in line to leave in a fire sale of top talent.

Football Insider understands Spurs will listen to offers for Dele Alli this summer while Serge Aurier’s return to PSG is 95% done.

This site has also revealed Davinson Sanchez will be sold regardless of who replaces Jose Mourinho.

Whelan insists getting rid of these players is the right move but claims Spurs still need to spend heavily if they are to challenge.

“There is going to be a lot of change at Tottenham,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“They need to get rid of a lot of deadwood. Even doing that, they won’t be challenging for the title.

“That’s the root of the issue with Kane. Are they going to go out and spend £300million? No.

“That’s what they need to do to become challengers. After that, do they have the mental capacity?

“Do they believe they can win the league? I don’t think they do. They are a team who can maybe get fourth and that’s it. It’s not good enough.”

Spurs will play in the new UEFA Europa Conference League next season after finishing seventh in the Premier League.

They also blew a chance of winning silverware last season as they lost to Man City in the Carabao Cup final.
