Whelan shares Calvert-Lewin prediction after Sky's 'surprise' Everton transfer update

Noel Whelan has revealed his surprise Everton are reportedly closing in on the £1.5million signing of Demarai Gray.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker suggested Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be thrilled to link up with the “exciting” winger.

Sky Sports have reported Gray is undergoing a medical on Merseyside today (Tuesday, 20th June) ahead of a move from Bayer Leverkusen.

The 25-year-old has a year left on his contract with the German outfit.

The ex-Leicester man has scored just once in 12 appearances since departing for the Bundesliga in January.

Asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs about Gray’s arrival, Whelan said: “He’s a fantastic player.

“I’m just surprised it’s only Everton in the running. We’ve seen the ability he has.

“Although he struggled at Leicester, £1.5million is next to nothing for a player who is only 25.

“He is also yet to enjoy his best years of football. He’s been around the Premier League for many years now.

“This signing could really excite the Evertonians if he can get going and show more of the quality he has. The service he will provide for [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin will be fantastic.

Benitez has prioritised bolstering his wide options to help support Calvert-Lewin in attack.

As revealed by Football Insider on Monday, Everton are also set to sign Andros Townsend on a free transfer.

No one scored more headed goals in the Premier League last season than Calvert-Lewin.
