Whelan slams ‘absolute farce’ after source shares latest Celtic manager twist
Noel Whelan has called Celtic a “farce” and a “mess” after it was announced Eddie Howe would not be joining the club.
The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is baffled at how Celtic have failed to appoint the ex-Bournemouth boss.
In a statement on Friday, Celtic confirmed Howe would not become their new manager due to reasons “outwith both his and Celtic’s control”.
With Celtic’s months-long Howe hunt at an end, the club are in advanced talks with Ange Postecoglou.
A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the Australian has asked for permission to be released from his contract.
Postecoglou, 55, is currently in charge of Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos and has previously managed the Australian national side.
Whelan claims his appointment will not appease the Celtic fans who have been waiting for Howe to be announced for months.
“It’s been an absolute farce,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“For a club of that size, to not have a manager in place three months after sacking the last manager.
“They should have had something in place when they sacked Neil Lennon. Now they are wasting even more time.
“They are looking at a manager who’s managed over in Asia, is that going to appease the Celtic fans?
“It’s not going to go down well if he’s their number two candidate. I’m not taking anything away from the man.
“It’s a huge job and Howe was the perfect fit. The Celtic fans are so wound up, their club haven’t been able to get a manager who has been out of work for a year.
“That’s really strange. They have to be fuming at the board right now, that club is a right mess.”
In other news, Kieran Maguire has revealed that Celtic could land “£80million while Rangers get nothing” due to “nonsense” Uefa rule.
