Whelan: This is why Leeds are the real winners after what Phillips has just done
Noel Whelan can’t wait to see what Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips does next after shining on England duty.
The former Whites hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was blown away by Phillips as he turned in a performance of the highest quality on Sunday afternoon.
Phillips, 25, started for England in their opening Euro 2020 fixture against Croatia at Wembley and provided the vital assist in the 1-0 win.

He won the adulation of pundits and teammates alike after dominating up against Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic.
England fans saw a side of Phillips’ game that has been missing since Marcelo Bielsa came to Leeds as he pressed high up the pitch and acted as a creative midfielder at times.
Whelan insists Phillips has made the entire city of Leeds proud and tipped him to get even better over the next few weeks.

“It was a proud moment for the people of Leeds,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I’m so proud of him. You can see his development over the last few years and how comfortable he is now.
“That shone through yesterday. We saw a little bit of everything against Croatia. That forward role he used to play at Leeds.
“Also that tenacious, aggressive side he always brings to Leeds games. Stopping players getting forward and breaking.
“We saw a mature Kalvin Phillips yesterday. He looks like he’s settled into international life and does not look out of place at all.
“I have no doubt he will grow as a player and that can only benefit Leeds. It’s brilliant for Leeds, really.
“I’m so excited to see how he does over the next few weeks. He will only get better if he continues to play.”
