Whelan thrilled by update on Bielsa signing new Leeds contract
Noel Whelan is thrilled to hear Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is close to signing a new contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites and Middlesbrough striker heaped praise on the 65-year-old for his “great integrity” in not accepting a new deal until after the season finished.
Bielsa‘s current contract at Elland Road expires this summer, as he notoriously only signs 12-month deals.
Football Insider understands Leeds will start work this week on finalising new deals for Bielsa and his coaching staff.
The club are confident the Argentine will put pen to paper shortly after holding preliminary talks with his representatives over a new one-year agreement.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Bielsa’s contract situation, Whelan said: “Let’s be honest, it was never in doubt.

“Bielsa is a man of great integrity. He wants to do the job first before accepting a new contract. The money is not of interest to him. It is about the benefit he can bring to the club and whether he feels like he deserves to be given a new contract.
“Absolutely, he deserves that contract. We finished the season so strongly and only Liverpool were ahead of us in the form table. It really has been an incredible season.
“The contract will be signed and sorted out by the chairman. Now it is time to start thinking about next season and how we can make this team stronger and improve on that ninth placed finish.”
