Noel Whelan believes that experience of playing in the Championship will give Leeds United a big advantage in the Premier League this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road insists that the Whites are better suited to playing in the top-flight than they were in the second tier.
Leeds, who have two wins, a draw and a defeat under their belt so far, have won plenty of plaudits for their high-energy and attack-minded displays this season.
The Whites will play eight games less than they did during their time in England’s second-tier.
Whelan believes that the less intensive schedule will help Leeds across the season and insists that Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics are actually better suited for the Premier League.
Whelan told Football Insider: “This is the way we play, this is the way Marcelo Bielsa likes his teams set up, very much like Liverpool; pressing high, winning the ball back.
“The work rate that everybody puts in is quite incredible, the amount of ground they cover. That is what you’ve got to do in the Premier League, you’ve got to be fit, you’ve got to be ticking certain boxes other teams aren’t.
“We’re going to need the rest and recuperation because we put so much into a game that we’re going to need that respite. Playing in the Premier League is going to work in our favour, I think we’re made for the Premier League the way we play.
“Every game is very open and that suits us, there are not any teams like the Championship that come and put five men behind the ball at the back – it actually works in our favour the way we’re set up.
“We were a Premier League team last year but this year we’re going to be a lot more effective.”
In other Leeds United news, Whelan has lauded a “massive change” after update on big-money commercial deal.
