Noel Whelan claims Marcelo Bielsa will not make changes to his Leeds United line-up to accommodate Niall Huggins despite his impressive debut.
The former Whites forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Ezgjan Alioski will be selected over Huggins for the foreseeable future starting with Wolves on Friday.
Huggins, 20, came on in the second half of Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in place of a visibly fuming Alioski, 29, and he impressed on his senior bow.
The defender’s impressive debut has led to speculation that the could start in Leeds’ next match against Wolves.
Whelan doesn’t think Bielsa will make this change but he claimed Huggins will be starting games for Leeds in the future.
Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “It’s very difficult because we know Bielsa will always pick Alioski. Right now we don’t have a million options.
“Yes, later on in time, Huggins could be the player out there. He looks very capable and mature. Alioski will take that role now. He brings the experience we need in the Premier League.
“I do think that we’ll see a lot more of Huggins in the near future starting in a Leeds United shirt.
“Bielsa won’t make those changes now, He’ll stick with the players that have done it up until now.
“When Alioski walked off, he didn’t seem best pleased. We saw the good in Alisoki going forward but the defensive frailties were there. Needless freekicks and rash challenges.
“But that’s the future we have now. There’s competition for places with young guys pushing the more experienced pros.”
Leeds will be looking to jump back into the top half of the Premier League with a home win against Wolves.
Nuno Espirito Santos’ side won their first away game since November in their last outing against Southampton.
In other Leeds United news, Whelan spotted something special from Pascal Struijk against Arsenal.
