Why Pontus Jansson will struggle against this Aston Villa 27-year-old

COMMENT by Amir Mir

Jonathan Kodjia is expected to take the field for Aston Villa against Leeds on Thursday night where he will come up against Leeds defender Pontus Jansson.

The on-loan Torino centre-back has been in fine form for Garry Monk’s side this season – one of the main reasons as to why they currently sit in a play-off spot.

But when the Swede visits Villa Park, he will come up against striker Kodjia, who on home soil, will cause him numerous problems.

The 27-year-old has scored six of his eight goals at Villa Park this season and has been one of Steve Bruce’s standout players.

Kodjia’s pace, confidence and trickery on the ball will mean their star defender Jansson will struggle against the Ivory Coast international.

Jansson helped his side keep a clean sheet while playing against Villa in the 2-0 win at Elland Road in early December – stopping the threat of Kodjia along the way.

But at home, Kodjia has looked a completely different player, with the backing from the stands and more opportunities to attack.

Furthermore, as the home team, you would expect the away side to be difficult to break down, but Villa have found in the Championship that many teams have come and played their football at Villa Park- and that is what Leeds will do on Thursday.

This will suit Kodjia even more as it will give him more space to run at the Whites defence and provide him with more opportunity to add to his goal tally.

Not only that, he will be more expansive in front of his home fans as Bruce will give him more licence to attack.

All in all, it will be a great battle to watch and the person who comes out on top, may well be the difference maker.
