Danny Mills has urged Tottenham to sort out the issues surrounding Jan Vertonghen as a matter of urgency after seeing him left of the bench once again.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England international says that the Belgian’s partnership with fellow countryman Toby Alderweireld is one of the best around and that if both are fit, they should be playing alongside one another.
Vertonghen, 32, has not featured once during the club’s early-season fixtures, finding himself forced to sit on the substitutes’ bench against both Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Mills suggests that the powerhouse’s contract status could be playing a part in him staying out the side and that the club have got to sort the problem out sooner rather than later.
He told Football Insider: “Whatever is happening with Jan Vertonghen, they need to sort it out. That partnership with Toby Alderweireld, for club and country, is absolutely fantastic, it’s formidable.
“I don’t understand, unless Vertonghen’s injured, why they can’t sort out this issue very quickly. I’m not too sure what Vertonghen wants or what Spurs want. He’s at the club for another season, that’s it. Give him a new deal. Why would you not?
“People seem so reluctant to give players over 30 more than a one-year deal and I don’t know why. With defenders and goalkeepers, the most important thing is experience. If it means keeping him for another two seasons and you only get a season-and-a-half, that’s still money well spent.
Tottenham have won, drawn and lost their opening three matches, Joelinton scoring the only goal of the game to give Newcastle a shock victory in north London.
The Lilywhites will have had a week to get over their defeat and prepare for their next fixture, which sees them take on Arsenal in the first north London derby of the season.
