William Saliba and Christopher Nkunku react to Benoit Badiashile’s Chelsea message
Benoit Badiashile made his long-awaited return to action for Chelsea, featuring for the first time in 2025 during their victory over Copenhagen.
Chelsea took a step towards the quarter-finals of the Conference League with a 2-1 win against Copenhagen and now shift focus to Leicester on March 9.
Enzo Maresca once again opted for a rotated squad, handing starts to youngsters Shim Mheuka and Tyrique George.
Trevoh Chalobah also marked his return from injury, starting alongside Badiashile in defence. Badiashile had hinted at a Chelsea return earlier in the week in a social media post, and he made his return with a start, providing a much-needed boost for Maresca amid the club’s ongoing injury concerns.
Arsenal star William Saliba backs Benoit Badiashile injury return
Badiashile marked his return to Chelsea’s starting XI with a simple but focused message on Instagram, posting: “1/2” alongside a green tick emoji—signalling that the job is only half done following their 2-1 victory over Copenhagen.
Among those showing appreciation for his comeback were teammates Christopher Nkunku and Marc Cucurella, while Arsenal defender and fellow French international William Saliba also acknowledged his return.
The former Monaco centre-back has endured a frustrating season, managing just 13 appearances in all competitions, with most of his starts coming in the Conference League.
Despite his struggles for game time, Chelsea made it clear they were unwilling to part ways with Badiashile in January, rejecting interest from Marseille and Juventus.
Enzo Maresca must build momentum amid defensive issues and fan frustration
Maresca has faced increasing scrutiny from Chelsea fans this season, with the team plagued by defensive errors and inconsistent form.
The injury crisis at the back saw Chelsea recall Trevoh Chalobah in January, as absences for Badiashile and Wesley Fofana left them short of options. Now, with all three back in contention, competition for places in defence is intensifying.
Chelsea’s last four fixtures | Date | Competition |
Copenhagen 1-2 Chelsea | 6 March | Conference League |
Chelsea 4-0 Southampton | 25 February | Premier League |
Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea | 22 February | Premier League |
Brighton 3-0 Chelsea | 14 February | FA Cup |
Earlier in the season, Chelsea were seen as potential title challengers—claims that Maresca himself dismissed—but their recent struggles have left them fighting for a Champions League spot instead.
With exits from all domestic competitions, the Conference League remains the club’s last hope for silverware. Success in Europe would likely ease some of the pressure on Maresca, but anything less will only add to the uncertainty surrounding his future.
